Businessman and politician Jimmy Wanjigi has strongly opposed his ongoing prosecution for the alleged illegal possession of ten firearms. Appearing before the court today, Wanjigi argued that his prosecution is in direct violation of a previous High Court order, which he claims should have put the matter to rest.
Wanjigi’s legal team contended that the High Court had already issued an order that invalidates the current charges against him. According to Wanjigi, the court had earlier ruled that he should not be prosecuted on the same grounds related to the firearms, which were allegedly found in his possession. This development is the latest in a protracted legal battle that has drawn significant public attention.
During today’s court session, Wanjigi was granted a personal bond of Sh10 million. This bond allows him to remain out of custody while his case proceeds. The court scheduled the next hearing for September 12, 2024, when the arguments surrounding the High Court’s previous order and the validity of the current charges are expected to be further examined.
Wanjigi, a prominent figure in Kenya’s political and business circles, has often found himself at the center of legal and political controversies. The firearms case, which dates back several years, has seen numerous legal twists and turns, with Wanjigi maintaining his innocence throughout.
The decision to grant Wanjigi a personal bond indicates the court’s recognition of the seriousness of the legal issues at play, particularly concerning the alleged disregard of the High Court’s earlier ruling. The outcome of this case could have significant implications, not just for Wanjigi, but also for the interpretation of judicial orders in the Kenyan legal system.
As the next hearing approaches, all eyes will be on how the court navigates the complex legal arguments presented by Wanjigi’s defense team, and whether the High Court’s previous order will ultimately shield him from prosecution in this contentious case.
