The Ukambani region is in mourning following the untimely death of celebrated radio presenter Mercy Mawia, affectionately known as Kamuwetangi. Mawia, who became a household name through her vibrant and engaging shows on the airwaves, passed away on Monday after a short illness. She was 42.
Mercy Mawia’s career in radio spanned over two decades, during which she became an iconic voice in Ukambani and beyond. Known for her warm personality, insightful commentary, and dedication to community issues, she was beloved by listeners of all ages. Her moniker, Kamuwetangi, which means “the encourager,” was a testament to her ability to uplift and inspire her audience.
Born and raised in Machakos County, Mawia’s passion for broadcasting began early. She started her career at a local station before moving to Mbaitu FM, where she quickly rose to prominence. Her popular morning show, “Mawaidha na Mawia,” combined news, interviews, and lively discussions, earning her a loyal following. Mawia’s deep connection with her listeners was evident in her interactive approach, often inviting them to share their stories and opinions.
Her colleagues remember her as a dedicated professional who brought energy and enthusiasm to her work every day. “Mercy had an incredible gift of connecting with people,” said John Mutua, her longtime co-host. “She was more than a colleague; she was a mentor and a friend to many of us in the industry.
