Veteran journalist Macharia Gaitho was arrested Wednesday morning but was released shortly afterward when authorities realized they had apprehended the wrong person.
“The National Police Service would like to clarify to the public that this morning, we arrested journalist Macharia Gaitho in a case of mistaken identity, meant for the arrest of Francis Gaitho who is our subject of investigation,” stated the NPS.
The police headquarters emphasized that they do not target journalists, calling the incident “highly regrettable.” Questions arose about why Gaitho was picked up at a police station where he had driven, leading to swift clarification from the authorities.
Reports of Gaitho’s arrest spread rapidly after a video clip showing him being bundled into a car at Karen Police Station was shared on social media, prompting the police to issue a statement.
“The National Police Service remains committed to working with the media while discharging our mandate of promoting accountability and transparency,” the statement read.
The incident has raised concerns about police procedures and the protection of journalists in the course of their duties.
