Makadara Law Courts is reeling after Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti, who was shot in a courtroom on Thursday, succumbed to her injuries, Chief Justice Martha Koome confirmed on Saturday.
Magistrate Kivuti was attacked in Courtroom Number 9 shortly after delivering a ruling in a case involving a police officer’s wife. Chief Inspector Samson Kipchirchir Kipruto, Officer Commanding Station at Londiani Police Station, reacted violently to the court’s decision to deny his wife’s request for bail. His wife, Jenniffer Wairimu, faced charges of fraud involving Sh2.9 million.
The official incident report reveals that Kipruto entered the courtroom through the magistrate’s door and fired at Kivuti, hitting her in the chest and hip. The assailant was subsequently shot and killed by another officer on the scene.
In the chaos, three other officers were injured: Augustine Michael Kithumbi (left eye), Maureen Lepes (left leg), and Eunice Macharia (left hand). They were taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Chief Justice Koome expressed deep sorrow over the loss and called for empathy during this difficult period, emphasizing the judiciary’s solidarity in the face of this tragedy.
