Police in Machakos have launched an investigation into the suspected suicide of a tout who was found dead inside a makeshift cell shortly after his arrest by the Machakos County Inspectorate, commonly known as Kanjos, at the Machakos bus terminus.
Eyewitnesses reported that the middle-aged man was arrested for the third time by the Kanjos and was discovered dead shortly after being detained. This raised concerns among onlookers about the circumstances of his detention and subsequent death.
A large crowd gathered at the scene, demanding answers from the county askaris, who had reportedly disappeared following the incident. The police were called in to manage the situation and disperse the agitated crowd.
Machakos Chief of Staff Lawrence Ngovi confirmed the incident and appealed for calm as investigations begin. The event caused a temporary halt to business at the bustling bus station, as residents sought to understand what had happened.
Machakos County Secretary Muya Ndambuki announced that the officer involved in the incident has been interdicted pending further investigation.
The body of the deceased has been taken to Machakos Level Five morgue.
