Migori County government has initiated the construction of a modern fish landing site equipped with a cold storage facility at God Kachola beach. The facility, estimated to cost Ksh. 150 million, aims to significantly reduce post-harvest losses, which have been a major issue for the local fisherfolk community.
Last week, officers from the county’s agriculture department held a public participation exercise at the beach to gather feedback from the community. Lucas Museda, the Migori County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries Management, announced that the construction of the cooling facility will begin soon. Museda emphasized that this project is intended to address the post-harvest challenges that have plagued the region due to the lack of adequate cooling facilities.
Additionally, Museda mentioned that the county government is also building fish preservation facilities in major towns, including Isebania, Migori, and Rongo.
Meanwhile, fishermen at Migingo Island have called on the government to assist them in obtaining fish preservation facilities. The beach management unit secretary, Juma Mbaya, reported that the cooling facilities they had been using were recently destroyed by heavy tides. As a result, fishermen have been forced to transport their catch to the mainland immediately in search of markets, due to the lack of storage facilities on the island.
