Three police officers were injured on Thursday during a security operation in Mlolongo, Machakos County, as they pursued a gang of robbers. According to a police report, the officers were patrolling near Cooperative Bank in Mlolongo when they encountered a gang of four men attacking a woman.
In an attempt to apprehend the suspects, three of the gang members tried to flee in a getaway car but were blocked by the police, leading to a violent confrontation. During the struggle, three officers sustained injuries. “Police Constable Okari suffered a swollen right eye, a cut on the side of the head, and a dislocated right hand. Police Constable Kyalo suffered a swollen right leg near the knee, and Police Constable Ndung’u has chest pains,” the report detailed.
The investigation revealed that the suspects had altered the original plates of the getaway car from KDH 630Y to KDA 730F using stickers. The apprehended individuals, identified as John Maina (27), Alex Mutinda Mutuku (30), and Julius Owino Okoth (26), were found in possession of a variety of tools and items, including digit and letter stickers for changing number plates, a bunch of assorted keys, ten pieces of master key with a grinding file, eight phones of assorted models, three crowbars, one hook, and a panga.
The woman who was attacked lost several items, including a mobile phone, a wristwatch, a purse containing her ID, ATM, Huduma, and NHIF cards, which have yet to be recovered.
The suspects are set to be arraigned on charges of robbery with violence, assaulting police officers, resisting arrest, and possessing suspected stolen property.
