Cheruiyot Kirui, the Kenyan climber who went missing on Wednesday during an expedition to Mount Everest, has been found dead.
Kirui’s body was discovered a few meters below the summit, according to the Nepali mountaineering news website Everest Today. “He was on a daring mission to reach the summit without supplementary oxygen and was accompanied by a Nepali climber Nawang Sherpa, whose fate is still unknown,” reported the website on Thursday.
Kirui, a banker with Kenya Commercial Bank, went missing along with his guide Nawang Sherpa. Officials from Seven Summit Treks (SST), a Kathmandu-based mountaineering company, lost contact with the pair at Bishop Rock, situated at an altitude of 8,000 meters.
Mount Everest, the highest mountain on Earth, stands at 8,848.86 meters above sea level and straddles the border between China and Nepal.
