The Ministry of Interior has reported the disappearance of nine birth certificate booklets from the Mutomo Registration Office, raising concerns about potential misuse. Each booklet contains 100 pages, with serial numbers ranging from 1502001 to 1502900. Authorities fear the stolen documents could be exploited to issue certificates to illegal immigrants.
The government has moved swiftly to address the situation, announcing that the stolen booklets have been invalidated. “We have cancelled the validity of the missing certificates, rendering them void,” a government spokesperson stated.
This incident comes at a time when Kenya is intensifying efforts to tighten border controls and combat illegal immigration. The fraudulent use of official documents, such as birth certificates, poses a significant threat to national security and immigration integrity. Birth certificates are crucial identification documents that grant individuals access to essential services, and their misuse could lead to serious legal, social, and security implications.
Local authorities are urging the public to be vigilant, especially in areas where such fraudulent activity may occur. “We are calling on citizens to report any suspicious activities or attempts to use these invalid documents,” the spokesperson added.
An investigation is currently underway to determine how the booklets were stolen, with security tightened at registration offices across the country to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The Ministry has reassured the public that they are taking all necessary steps to recover the missing booklets and prosecute those responsible for the theft. In the meantime, citizens are advised to
verify the authenticity of birth certificates issued within this range of serial numbers before using them in official matters.
