Through a bold assertion that underscores the shifting dynamics of Kenya’s political landscape, Cyrus Musyoka, the esteemed Member of Kitui County Assembly (MCA) for Ikanga/Kyatune ward , has declared that Wiper Party leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka is the frontrunner for the presidency in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Kitui Times, Musyoka, who is also known by the moniker “Sonko,” emphasized that Kalonzo is the only candidate with the widespread national support necessary to lead the country.
MCA Sonko dismissed the recent political alignment between Raila Odinga and President William Ruto as a mere tactical maneuver devoid of substantive impact. He characterized the alliance as symbiotic, suggesting that President Ruto’s overtures toward Odinga were primarily aimed at stabilizing his struggling administration. Sonko opined that by drawing Odinga into this arrangement and supporting his bid for the African Union Chairmanship, Ruto hoped to quell the growing discontent among Kenyans with his government.
Highlighting the longstanding political partnership between Kalonzo and Odinga, Sonko urged Odinga to officially endorse Kalonzo Musyoka as the leader of the opposition. He noted that Kalonzo has been a steadfast ally to Odinga, having twice served as his presidential running mate and remaining loyal in the 2022 elections despite being overlooked for the deputy position.
According to Sonko, Kalonzo’s contribution to Odinga’s campaigns, particularly in delivering a significant bloc of votes, surpasses that of any other leader within the Azimio coalition.
As a prominent and favored Wiper candidate for the Kitui South parliamentary seat in the 2027 elections, Sonko expressed unwavering confidence in Kalonzo Musyoka’s leadership. He stated that the youth, along with the majority of Kenyans, are rallying behind Kalonzo as the new opposition leader. Sonko called on Odinga to step aside gracefully, allowing Kalonzo to assume this role in preparation for a robust challenge in the upcoming presidential race.
In his closing remarks, Sonko highlighted the unique opportunity before the Kamba community, positioning it as a decisive moment for their political ascendancy under the leadership of Kalonzo Musyoka. He portrayed Kalonzo’s candidacy as unstoppable, affirming that the Wiper Party is poised to hold the Ruto administration accountable as a government-in-waiting for 2027.
