In a historic move, the United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution proclaiming July 7th as World Kiswahili Language Day. The resolution, tabled by Kenya and Tanzania on behalf of the African Group, underscores the importance of multilingualism as a core value of the United Nations.
The resolution highlights Kiswahili’s significant role in promoting peace, unity, socio-economic development, and cultural diversity. It also emphasizes the language’s contribution to creating awareness and fostering dialogues among diverse communities.
Kiswahili ranks among the ten most widely spoken languages globally, with hundreds of millions of speakers across sub-Saharan Africa.
