A senior police officer stationed at Kegonga Police Station in Migori tragically died on Monday after accidentally shooting himself while issuing a pistol to a colleague.
According to a police report obtained by one of the media house, Corporal Caudence Nyangenya, who was in charge of the lines and armory, was issuing a Beretta pistol to James Mugo Kabachia, the Kuria East Sub-County Police Commander. During the process, while performing standard safety precautions, Nyangenya accidentally discharged a round from the 9mm pistol, injuring himself in the right thigh.
Following the accidental discharge, Nyangenya was rushed to Kegonga Sub-County Hospital. Due to his deteriorating condition, he was later referred to Migori County Hospital for further treatment. Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead upon arrival due to excessive bleeding.
His body has been preserved at the Migori County Hospital morgue pending a post-mortem examination.
