Veronica Mueni Nduva, the recently appointed Secretary General of the East African Community (EAC), set a new tone for collaboration and collective responsibility among staff during her inaugural meeting at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha.
In a gathering attended by representatives from various EAC organs and institutions both in-person and online, Nduva emphasized the indispensable role each staff member plays in advancing the organization’s objectives. “Unity and collaboration are the cornerstone of our success,” she asserted, urging all to work cohesively to drive the EAC agenda forward.
Under her leadership, Nduva pledged an inclusive environment where every staff member is valued and treated equally, irrespective of their rank or nationality. She stressed the importance of projecting a positive image of the EAC, emphasizing that staff act as ambassadors, both within and outside the workplace.
Highlighting the challenges facing the EAC, Nduva called for resilience and innovation in problem-solving. “By embracing change and fostering a culture of innovation, we can overcome obstacles and seize opportunities that propel the EAC to greater heights,” she remarked.
Deputy Secretary General Annette Mutaawe Ssemuwemba and Judge President of the East African Court of Justice (EACJ) Justice Nestor Kayobera echoed Nduva’s sentiments, emphasizing the need for teamwork and collaboration among EAC leadership to address challenges facing the community.
Ssemuwemba outlined the progress made by the EAC, including discussions on the institutional structure during the Permanent Secretaries/Under Secretaries Retreat in Kampala. She pledged the Secretariat’s full support in realizing the community’s potential.
Justice Kayobera stressed the importance of good relations among EAC organs and institutions, warning against competition and rivalry, which could hinder the integration process.
The meeting also saw the presence of key figures such as Deputy Secretary General Andrea Aguer Ariik Malueth, Clerk of the East African Legislative Assembly Alex Obatre, Counsel to the Community Dr. Anthony Kafumbe, Deputy Registrar of the EACJ Christine Mutimura Wekesa, and heads of various EAC institutions.
Nduva’s call for unity, professionalism, and dedication sets a promising direction for the EAC, signaling a commitment to fostering a cohesive workforce and advancing the interests of East Africa as a whole.
