St. Charles Lwanga High School in Kitui hosted a vibrant Career Day on Saturday, May 25, where students and teachers from different schools gathered to gain insights into future career paths. The highlight of the event was a keynote speech by Dr. Mutuku, a renowned educationist and career consultant, who provided invaluable guidance on marketable and skillful careers in the modern job market.
Dr. Mutuku is a distinguished Mathematics lecturer at Kenyatta University. Renowned for her expertise and engaging teaching style, she has inspired countless students in the field. Her dedication to education extends beyond the classroom, as she frequently speaks at career and academic events.
Dr. Mutuku began her speech by emphasizing the importance of aligning career choices with current market demands. She underscored the need for students to be aware of evolving industry trends and to develop skills that are in high demand. “In today’s dynamic job market, it is crucial to pursue careers that not only interest you but also offer significant opportunities for growth and stability,” Dr. Mutuku advised.
Focusing on marketable careers, Dr. Mutuku highlighted several sectors experiencing rapid growth, including information technology, healthcare, engineering, and renewable energy. She pointed out that careers in software development, data analysis, nursing, biomedical engineering, and environmental science are particularly promising. “These fields are not only expanding but also offer competitive salaries and numerous opportunities for advancement,” she noted.
In addition to marketable careers, Dr. Mutuku stressed the importance of skillful careers—those that require specific technical or vocational skills. She praised professions such as plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, and culinary arts, emphasizing that these careers are essential and often offer lucrative and stable employment. “Skillful careers should not be overlooked. They are the backbone of our society and provide excellent job security and entrepreneurial opportunities,” she said.
Dr. Mutuku also addressed the importance of acquiring soft skills, such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and adaptability, which are crucial in any career. She encouraged students to engage in extracurricular activities, internships, and volunteer work to develop these skills. “Employers today are looking for well-rounded individuals who can adapt to different roles and work environments,” she explained.
The event included interactive sessions where students could ask questions and seek personalized advice from Dr. Mutuku and other career experts present. Many students expressed their appreciation for the practical and forward-thinking advice provided. “I now have a clearer understanding of what steps to take to pursue a career in environmental science,” said James Mwanzia, a Form Four student.
Teachers also praised the event for its comprehensive approach to career guidance. “Dr. Mutuku’s insights have opened our eyes to the vast opportunities available and the importance of being proactive in career planning,” remarked one of the teacher.
Students had the opportunity to engage with exhibitors from prestigious institutions such as Mt. Kenya University, Tharaka Nithi University, St. Paul’s University, Strathmore University, Kasarani Catering College, and Gretsa University. The exhibition provided students with valuable information on various academic programs, career opportunities, and vocational training options. This interaction allowed them to explore diverse educational pathways and make informed decisions about their future careers, greatly enhancing the overall benefit of the event.
The Career Day at St. Charles Lwanga High School was deemed a resounding success, providing students with the knowledge and motivation needed to make informed decisions about their futures. As the event concluded, Dr. Mutuku left the students with an empowering message: “Your career is a journey, not a destination. Embrace every opportunity to learn and grow, and you will find success in whatever path you choose.”
This engaging and informative day has undoubtedly equipped the students of St. Charles Lwanga High School with the tools and inspiration to pursue fulfilling and prosperous careers.
